Visits and checks

How do I check the clinician’s licence?

A clinician is the person assessing or treating you, such as a doctor or nurse practitioner. Get their full name, role and the state they can practise in. Then check the public record.

Use the board record

State medical boards publish doctors’ licence status and public disciplinary history.

The Federation of State Medical Boards offers a directory linking to state boards.

Use the directory link in the evidence notes. Choose the board in the state you will be in at the time of your visit.

Match the person, not just the name

Look for the full name and licence number. Check the current status and read any listed restrictions or board actions.

Some states use separate medical boards for different kinds of doctor. A search on a single board can miss a record.

Ask a nurse practitioner or physician assistant to name the state board that keeps their licence record. Check that board directly.

Understand the limits

A record with no public action does not measure how good the care will be.

US health department guidance, as of September 2026, links permission for remote care to the patient’s location.

If a name or status does not match, ask for an explanation before paying for a visit.
